Here’s what to look out for, how to fix them and how to avoid making them in the future.
Some people are familiar with the sounds that come out of their fridge. But what do you hear when your refrigerator makes those annoying noises? If you are like most Americans, you probably don’t know about the noises your refrigerator makes. In fact, according to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), many people aren’t even aware there are noises coming from their appliances.
Snapping, crackling, and popping
If you hear a loud “snap,” “crack,” or “pop” coming from your refrigerator, it could mean something serious. In some cases, the noise indicates that the compressor motor is failing, and needs to be replaced. If you notice the noise while the fridge is running, there are several things you can do to help prevent further damage. First, check to see if the door seal is loose or damaged. A loose door seal allows moisture into the freezer compartment. Moisture causes condensation inside the freezer, which can freeze up the coils and cause them to short out. Also, try to keep the door closed as much as possible. Finally, turn off the power supply to the unit. When the power goes out, the compressor shuts down automatically. Once the power is turned back on, the compressor will start again.
Buzzing and humming
If you are hearing buzzing or humming noises coming from your fridge, it could be caused by a faulty water valve. This happens because there is no water flowing into the system. When you turn off the faucet, the water stops flowing and the air inside the pipes expands. As the air cools, it contracts again and creates a loud buzz or hum. But don’t worry; it’s fixable.
To start, check whether the water line is connected properly. Turn off the water supply to your refrigerator. Then, open up the door and look around inside. Is there any water leaking out? If so, you have a problem. Otherwise, continue reading.
Now that you know what causes the problem, let’s see how to solve it. To begin, turn off the power switch of your refrigerator. Next, unplug the appliance. After that, lift the bottom panel and take the cover off the fan. Underneath the cover, you will find a small plastic tube. Remove this tube. Now, flip over the fan and unscrew the screws holding it together. When you remove the fan, you will notice a rubber seal attached to it. Peel this seal away from the fan. With the fan removed, you can now access the vent pipe.
Unscrew the screws holding the vent pipe in place. Lift the vent pipe and pull it out. There is another rubber seal attached to the end of the pipe. Pull this seal away from the pipe. Now, push the pipe back into position and screw the vent pipe back in place. Replace the fan and reattach the cover. Plug in the refrigerator and turn it on. If you hear the buzzing or humming sound, it means that the water line is broken.
Beeping or chiming
If you find that your refrigerator beeps or chimes even though the doors are closed, it might be because there is something inside blocking the opening mechanism. You can correct this issue by checking whether anything is obstructing the door.
Most Samsung refrigerators have a door alarm which blinks if the door is open. To turn off the alarm, go into the settings menu, tap “Alarms,” scroll down to “Refrigerator Door,” and select “Off.” Your model may differ slightly.

Blowing and whistling
This sound often occurs when air enters the fan motor housing during operation. It usually happens because there are gaps around the fan blades. When you turn on the refrigerator, cold air rushes into the fan housing and creates pressure inside the housing. Water dripping onto the defrost heaters inside the freezer can also cause this type of issue. A hissing or sizzly sound could mean that the defrost heater isn’t working properly. To check whether the defrost heater is functioning correctly, open the door to the freezer and look for drips on the floor. If you see any, try turning off the power to the freezer. Then turn the power back on and close the door. If the hissing stops, the defrost heater is working fine. If it continues, call us immediately.
Banging
“Thudding” noises heard while making ice are most likely caused by air bubbles trapped within the ice cubes. Air bubbles form during freezing because water molecules move around faster than ice crystals do. This movement causes the ice cube to expand and contract, creating internal stress and causing the ice to crack. When the ice cracks, the air escapes.
The resulting holes allow some of the liquid to escape, which creates a louder banging sound.
How to Fix Ice Maker Noise
1. Check if the ice maker is plugged in correctly. If not, unplug it and plug it back in again.
2. Make sure the water level is full.
3. Turn off the machine completely before cleaning.
4. Clean the ice tray using warm water and soap.
5. Dry the ice tray thoroughly after washing.
6. Replace any worn parts.
7. Use only cold water to fill the ice maker.
