Are you looking to add another delicious recipe to your repertoire? If so, then baking whole chicken wings at home might be just what you’ve been searching for. In this video, we’ll show you exactly how long to bake them at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (or 205 degrees Celsius.)
Baking whole poultry parts at home can save time and money over buying pre-seasoned boneless or bone-in chicken wingettes at the store. These tasty treats are traditionally eaten as appetizers during game-day parties.
The total cooking time for 8 pieces varies depending on the size of the bird and whether they’re boneless or bone-ins. According to our handy chart below, boneless wings take around 25 minutes to cook, whereas bone-in wings only require 15 to 20 minutes to finish.
Have you ever wondered what chicken wings taste like when they’re baked? Well, I’ll tell you!
Is it an extra crispy coating? Does it have something to do with the marinade? Or does it w/baking?
Whatever it is, baking whole chicken wings takes a lot longer than frying them. But you’ll still enjoy delicious results. Here’s everything you need to know about cooking your favorite wing recipe. And if you’d like to try out my favorite chicken wing recipe, click here.
How Long Should You Bake Chicken Wings For?
Chicken wings usually come fully coated with breading, batter, sauce, etc., but you can easily bake them without any additional ingredients. If you prefer a plain white chicken wing, just brush the wings with oil before putting them in the oven.
For some recipes (like my original wing recipe), I recommend brushing the wings with a mixture of melted butter, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. This makes sure the flavor sticks. However, adding anything else such as sauces, veggies, or spices may result in unevenly cooked wings since these items won’t cook evenly. So if you decide to experiment with different flavors, stick to simple things like butter, salt & pepper, and a little bit of garlic powder.
What Temperature Do You Cook Chicken Wings At?
Since wings are pretty large pieces of meat, you’ll definitely want to cook them until they reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use an instant-read thermometer to confirm that they’re done.
You can also see them with your own eyes. When the skin starts to turn golden brown, they’re ready. Remember that the actual temperature inside the oven will vary depending on your temperature. Ovens typically run hotter near the door than they do toward the center of the oven.
Which Type Of Oven Should You Use?
It doesn’t really matter too much what kind of oven you use as long as you give it plenty of room to heat properly. If your oven runs hot, you’ll want to reduce the temperature setting. If it’s cold, crank it up to high. No matter how you set it, ensure it gets warm for the next step.
Also, look for a rack that allows grease to drain away from the food, so it doesn’t cause flare-ups. All of mine fit nicely under the broiler pan.
How Many Hours Can Baked Chicken Wings Last On Medium Heat?
This depends on the size of your wings and the amount of breadcrumbs you put on them. Typically, it takes me anywhere from 4-8 hours to finish my raw wings completely.
But even though that seems like a ton of time, I eat almost all the leftover wings daily. They go quickly.
So whatever method you choose, let your wings simmer slowly for a couple of hours and eat them the same day.
How Long To Bake Whole Chicken Wings At 400 degrees F?
It doesn’t matter if you’re cooking whole chicken wings at home, baking wings at the restaurant, or getting food delivered – everyone wants them hot and crispy when they come out of the oven! But just like anything else, the best results happen with proper timing. Here’s how long it takes to bake whole chicken wings at 400°F.
1. Selecting Quality Ingredients
Quality ingredients go a long way toward ensuring your wing recipe turns out perfect every time. Buy only organic or free-range chicken wings. Free-range wings tend to have more flavor. For the highest quality frozen wings, look for 100% natural ingredients, including no fillers, additives, or preservatives.
2. How Many Wings Do I Need?
This depends on how large of breasts you used to make the wings. Generally speaking, we recommend 3 per serving size, but you can adjust this number according to your personal preference and the size of your serving containers. And remember, the hotter the temperature, the longer the wings will cook before they reach their desired state of crispiness. So if you’re looking to cut the heat down, choose a cooler setting on your oven. Also, make sure to leave plenty of space between each wing so they won’t overlap during cooking.
3. What Should My Warming Method Be?
Most ovens these days have a convection feature, so you may want to try warming the wings with that instead of regular heating elements. We suggest turning the convection setting to low, allowing your oven to maintain a steady temperature throughout the process.
4. Cooking Time & Temperature
Baking times vary depending on the type of dish you’re preparing, so here’s a general guideline:
*Whole chicken wings: 6 minutes per side on a medium heat setting. *Buffalo skin wings: 5 minutes per side on a high heat setting. *Crispy flatbread style wings: 5 minutes per wing on a high heat setting, 4 minutes per side on a low heat setting. *Tenders: 7 minutes per side on a broiler pan or grill grate over direct heat.
5. When Is The Best Time To Remove The Wings?
After they’ve been in the oven for approximately 8 minutes, remove the wings from the oven and carefully flip them over. They’ll continue to cook after being removed from the oven, so you don’t want to wait too long. Otherwise, you risk burning the outside of the meat.
Once the wings have cooled completely, you can pop them back into the fridge for later consumption. Or, simply slice them up right away and serve them immediately.

How long should I bake whole chicken wings at 400 degrees Fahrenheit?
When cooking chicken wings, the goal is to achieve crispy skin without drying out the meat.
The key is to cook them slowly at low temperatures until they reach the desired doneness.
To get crispier skin, you’ll want to start with a lower temperature and increase it gradually over time.
For example, if you’re using a convection oven, turn it down to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then raise the heat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit after 20 minutes.
If you’re using a conventional oven, you can start at 375 degrees Fahrenheit and then raise it to 425 degrees Fahrenheit after 15 minutes
