Refrigeration works by absorbing energy from the surrounding environment and transferring it into the interior of the fridge. This process requires electricity to run the compressor. As the compressor runs, it produces heat. This heat is transferred to the refrigerated area where it raises the temperature. In order to maintain the correct temperature, the compressor needs to run constantly. However, if the compressor stops running, the temperature drops rapidly. To prevent this rapid drop in temperature, the compressor continues to run even though the power supply is turned off. This continuous operation consumes extra electricity.
